YOUNGSTARS FOUNDATION TO PROMOTE YOUTH INCLUSION IN NIGERIA POLITICAL SPACE THROUGH YALF PROJECT

Young Aspirants Leadership Fellowship (YALF) is a preparatory program specifically designed to increase their awareness, participation and capacity for youth emergence in elective positions during 2019 elections in Nigeria.

Nigeria with its growing youth population does not have a consistent and structured non-partisan preparatory program for youths who desire to run for political offices. Therefore, there is a huge shortage in knowledge and capacity among youths on how to run for elective positions, source for funds, address campaign related issues and eventually win elections in Nigeria.

In order to address this flaw in the Nigerian political system, and increase the chances of genuine and honest youth candidates participating in the elections, Youngstars Development Initiative (Youngstars Foundation ) with support from Ford Foundation will be training and developing the aptitudes of over 200 young aspirants. These aspirants have an age range of 18-35 years from the northern states of Nigeria in the semester 1 workshop of the Young Aspirant Leadership Fellowship (YALF) program in April, 2018.

YALF objectives mainly include;
Advocating for changes in political parties’ policies in order to increase space and emergence of youth as party flag bearers.

Establishing a nonpartisan Information and Advisory Hub/toll-free service to provide structured information and guidance to youth aspirants and candidates.

Undertaking a study of the experiences and achievements of young aspirants in the 2019 Nigeria general elections as to advance learning on youth political participation.

YALF has many activities which entails;

Hosting 3 tailored YALF workshops for 200 progressive and undeserved youth aspirants using a structured training curriculum.

Hosting an interparty dialogue converging political parties on how to increase for youth candidates in political.

Young Aspirants Information Hub/toll-free service.

Producing and broadcasting "2019 weekly" on social media where current issues on electioneering are discussed from youth and young aspirant’s perspective.

Document and publish the experiences and stories of youth candidate’s participation in the 2019 general elections, and some more.
