Engage Improve Governance

YOUNGSTARS FOUNDATION AIMS TO INCREASE THE CAPABILITIES OF YOUTHS TO ENGAGE ELECTIVE REPRESENTATIVES TO IMPROVE GOVERNANCE


Canvassity is a two semester fellowship program that aims to empower youths with the knowledge, skills and mentoring needed to engage and support elected representatives and government institutions to improve governance, raise accountability, and enhance citizen-government collaboration throughout Africa. Work to build linkages between youth activists, civil society networks and regional governance architecture to strengthen government accountability and expand political participation across Africa.

Canvassity program contains participants of 40 youth activists selected from youth civil society groups and youth networks from 10 African countries. These participants have an age range of 18-35 years. Youngstars Foundation along with our sponsors- AIT and NED, work to build linkages between youth activists, civil society networks and regional governance architecture to strengthen government accountability and expand political participation across Africa.

Passing-it-on training exercise (PIO): This is a step down activity requiring every participants to converge and pass on what they have learnt at Canvassity semester 1 to at least 40 youths in their place of residence within a grace period of 8 weeks.

Community outreach (crowd pulling event).

6 Months engagement plan/ACDEG advocacy campaign: Every Canvassity participant is required to embark on a 6 month engagement with a government institution or an elected representative on a social problem that they are passionate about addressing within 6 months, March to August, 2018.

Mentorship and internship: As the participants embark on the 6 month engagement, Youngstars will provide them with a recommendation letter for internship/mentorship to NGOs and civil society leaders of their choice who shall mentor and provide moral support for Canvassity participants.

7 Days International Pan African learning visit to African Union (AU): Youngstars will identify 12 participants who have demonstrated commitment and reasonable advancement in post-semester 1 activities to participate in a seven day Pan African learning visit to AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia.

African charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance (ACDEG): Delegates are to identify 2 articles of ACDEG to incorporate into their government engagement activities, and suggest activities for advancing its ratification and/or implementation.
