CANVASSITY Pan African Youth Democracy Fellowship 2018, Season 3 is here again; the search is on for 50 bodacious youth influencers, youth NGOs and young professionals!

CANVASSITY Pan African Youth Democracy Fellowship 2018 is a dynamic youth program designed to improve the capacity of young people to effectively engage and support elected representatives and government institutions to improve government efficiency, raise accountability and foster citizen-government collaborations in Africa.

CANVASSITY Season 3 shall admit 50 pro-governance youth leaders into its yearlong knowledge and action-based fellowship.  The Fellowship shall require participants to participate in two workshop semesters of 10 days and 5 days respectively in Nigeria. All participants shall also identify an issue under any of our 6 focal areas they are passionate to address through a policy process and engagement with elected representatives and government institutions during the fellowship. Participants shall also participate in a campaign to promote the AU African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance (ACDEG) in their home countries.

A cohort shall participate in a 5-day Learning Visit to the headquarters of the African Union in Addis Ababa, as well as participate in CANVASSITY Democracy Exhibition among others. The Fellowship is an intense and demanding program designed for youths who have a conviction that we can make democracy and governance work in Africa in ONE GENERATION!

  • To empower youth with the knowledge, skills, and mentoring needed to engage and support elected representatives and government institutions to improve governance, raise accountability, and enhance citizen-government collaboration throughout Africa.
  • To build linkages between youth activists, civil society networks, and regional governance institutions to strengthen government accountability and expand political participation across Africa.

Two Semesters Workshop

  • Semester 1 shall be a 10 day residential workshop scheduled to hold last week of February, 2018.
  • Semester 2 shall be a 5 day residential workshop scheduled to hold 3rd week of September, 2018.

Passing it On

  • This is a mandatory step down exercise where participants are required to conduct a step down and share what they learnt from semester one workshop with at least 40 youths in their place of residence to qualify for semester two.

Engaging Governance through Policy Component

  • Each participant shall identify one key issue they shall work to address through a policy process and engagement with elected representatives/government institutions in their country. Each person shall choose an issue related to any of the 6 focal areas outlined above.

The CANVASS

  • Each participant shall also produce a creative arts on a CANVASS. It shall be a drawing illustration showing the problem they are tackling, its consequences on society and what society shall be like if the problem is addressed. This tool called – The Canvass will serve as an entry point for engagement and advocacy to the government agency, media and members of the community/stakeholders.

The ACDEG Campaign

  • As part of an ongoing partnership with AU African Governance Architecture Secretariat (AU-AGAS), participants shall promote the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, (ACDEG). The ACDEG is an AU instrument that commits all AU member states to promote democracy, protect human rights and enhance constitutionalism and the rule of law on the continent. Approximately 30 states have ratified the charter, but only a few are implementing it. To promote the Charter, participants are to identify any Two Articles of the ACDEG to incorporate into their government engagement activities, and suggest activities for advancing its ratification and/or implementation in their home countries. These will be promoted through explainer videos among others. The most active person in this campaign shall win a fully sponsored participation in an AU event in the continent in 2018.

International Learning Visit

  • Selected participants based on their performance and milestones shall participate in a 6 days Learning Visit to the Headquarters of the African Union in Ethiopia to better understand how regional bodies like the AU are working to promote democracy and good governance in Africa.

CANVASSITY Exhibition

  • The program shall conclude with the second semester workshop in September, 2018 in Abuja, Nigeria. This Exhibition will showcase different initiatives and innovative ways young people were able to engage their elected representatives and government agencies to make a change during the fellowship.

Cross Border Exchange

  • One of the major value-add of CANVASSITY is the unique opportunity to meet, share, learn and network with youths from different African countries!

CANVASSITY Electronic Version (CANVASSITY-eV)

Are you a young professional or fully employed and you desire to participate in CANVASSITY but may not have the time to physically attend the residential training?

We have thought about you by introducing CANVASSITY-eV!

It shall be the digital version that allows those who are not able to participate in the residential 10 and 5 days workshop to still participate. Those on CANVASSITY-eV shall receive all the learning materials weekly through a digital platform for a duration of 4 weeks for semester 1 and a duration of 3 weeks for semester 2. The e-version learning time table shall be flexible to allow online and offline participation. However, there shall be strict adherence to submission of assignments.

All participants of the e-Version shall also carry out all the different components of the program, shall be eligible for the 5 days Learning Visit to African Union among others. They shall all be rated equally. Registration fee shall also apply for each semester.

Please note that the residential shall accommodate only 50 participants and the e-version shall accommodate based on interest.
