Have you ever heard of Farawa community? It exists as a sub-urban area located in Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State having a highly dense population of less privileged persons with no access to education, the 2nd MDG is a mirage; absolutely difficult.
The Innovative Idea Response
Through different community forum, a Community Based Learning Center was established to provide early childhood care, nursery and primary school for children of the community.
It is common to ask what one can do in a community with many un-schooling but school-able children. Unable to further ignore the challenge, Abdullahi who is a graduate and understands the importance of education decided to mobilize the community to commence this unique community learning center in Farawa. He believes that like any other child anywhere in the world, these children can attain their fullest potentials if given basic education. Thus through community support, makeshift structures were constructed as classrooms and basic instructional materials were acquired to commence teaching. The center also boasts of a mini information unit in conformity with the Federal Government Policy on Education.
As at early 2011, the project boasts of over 172 pupils in nursery and primary schools with a growing number of youth enrolling in extra mural classes to prepare for secondary school leaving certificates and/or acquire different vocational and ICT skills. It also boasts of 12 staff members with qualifications ranging from Bachelor of Science (BSc.) to National Certificate of Education (NCE) that serve as teachers and run the academic and administration sections of the school. What a small idea can do in the hand of a committed and passionate youth!
